Nitassinan, “our land” in the Innu-aimun language, the territory of the Innus, the land of the people of the caribou, in northern Quebec. Land of spruce, granite and lakes, harnessed rivers, abandoned mines. Scattered islets, a granitic peninsula. Water everywhere.

On the shore of the lake, an unusual small house dominates the horizon. On the terrain of the Gagnon mine, closed since 1984, rusty carcasses, tires, broken machines lying in suspension between the state of nature and unauthorized dumping. There, I really understood at what point we had to browbeat our habits and mentality to accepter to leave this earth and its inhabitants find the course of their intimately linked destinies.
